Grand Rivers, Kentucky - Day 3

Who knew?!

The Mississippi River:

Is the second longest river in the United States at 2.340 miles.
It flows through ten states.
It takes 90 days for a drop of water to travel the entire length of the Mississippi River.  Average speed is about 3 mph.
Native Americans have lived along this river since at least the 4th millennium B.C.
The first European on record to have reached the Mississippi River was Spanish Hernando de Soto who arrived at the river on May 8, 1541.
Is the third largest watershed in the world.
The deepest place on the river is 200’ deep near Algiers Point in New Orleans.
At its widest point it stretches out over 7 miles in width.
The first bridge built across was in 1855 with the first railroad bridge finished a year later in 1856.
The name comes from Messipi, the French rendering of the Anishinable people (Ojibewe Indians) word misi-ziibi (“Great River”).
From its source in northern Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico, the river drops 1,475’.
The river consists of 29 locks and dams.
